(She did, however, learn how to drive a tractor.) She holds a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and spent more than 20 years editing and writing at newspapers in Raleigh, North Carolina; Wichita, Kansas; Dallas, Texas; and Rochester, New York. Her current day job is as an editor at George Eastman House.

Jann began her radio career in the 1990s as a volunteer announcer at WCPE-FM, the classical station in Wake Forest, North Carolina. She joined Jazz 90.1 in March 2010as the station’s Thursday-evening host, and in December 2010 moved to the weekday morning show.

She is also a hockey fan, subscribes to The Wall Street Journal (but avoids the editorial pages) and still follows the fortunes of Nebraska Cornhusker football. Jann, who also volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House, lives in Fairport with her cats, Hank and Lyle.

Hear Jann weekday mornings from 7-9 a.m. on Member Supported Jazz90.1. You can e-mail her at jann@jazz901.org, or become her fan on Facebook!

Eric Gruner began his involvement with WGMC (Jazz90.1) in 1982 volunteering part time on a weekend specialty show that featured new wave pop music. When the opportunity to do the Monday through Friday early morning show arose he jumped at the chance. The format at the time was a mix of soft rock and contemporary jazz. He was already working part time at WCMF, a rock format radio station which gave him the chance to work with some legendary radio people including Trip Reeb, Dave Kane, Uncle Roger and Brother Wease. “I loved radio and couldn’t believe that my first paying on-air job was at the number one rated station in Rochester” he says. Eric has also worked at WPXY (pop/top 40) WKLX (classic oldies) and WARM 101.3 where he hosted “Rochester’s Jazz Life” a weekend jazz show. “I was working at three different radio stations in the same market” he said, adding that is usually frowned on in the radio industry. “At one time I was on the air at two radio stations at the same time – live on one station and pre-recorded on another” All the while Eric continued to be involved with WGMC (Jazz 90.1) and moved to host the Mid-day jazz program when he became the station music director. It was as music director that Eric redirected the station towards full time jazz and eliminated the soft rock. “I thought the station had an identity crisis, going from music by Seals and Crofts to David Sanborn to Genesis to Miles Davis.” The popularity of the jazz format grew as Eric was promoted to station manager and “Jazz Radio in Rochester” was born. Eric left Jazz 90.1 to take a job in Toronto as program director at Canada’s full-time jazz station Jazz FM 91. You can hear Eric weekdays from 9-11 a.m. on Jazz90.1. You can contact Eric by emailing eric@jazz901.org or click the link below to visit Eric’s Facebook page.

Joëlle is a graduate of Purdue University with a concentration in French. She has also studied Spanish, German and Russian and would love to take a class in Portuguese, if she could find the time. Before radio, she was a social worker at the Monroe County Department of Social Services. She began her radio career after being rejected by WHAM for a part time News position. She was inspired by the News Director who took her aside and told her she had been HIS choice, but was voted down. From part time at WVOR to a full time gig in Erie, PA and a stop at WUSA in Tampa, Joëlle has played almost every kind of music, including stints at country stations. She found Jazz at first in Canandaigua and came home to Jazz at Jazz90.1, where she has been morning host for the past 15 years.

She loves Jazz, animals, and science fiction. She prefers daytime to night, summer to winter, and she really appreciates it when people take a second to put the two dots above the first ë in her name (alt 137). She drives everybody crazy insisting on correct pronunciation, writing little notes etc. Her biggest satisfaction at Jazz90.1 comes from knowing that the listeners care as deeply about the music as she does.

Hear Joëlle VanBuren middays from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. E.T. on Jazz90.1. You can contact Joëlle VanBuren by e-mailing joelle@jazz901.org.

From the early age of 5, Josh has turned his head to the heavens in awe of all things meteorological. Hailing from the town of Easton, Massachusetts, south of Boston, Josh began following the weather after Hurricane Gloria hit in 1985. After winning 1st place in his 8th grade Science fair for a project comparing a year’s worth of temperatures at his home with that of Logan Airport, he decided to pursue his fascination and become a weather observer for his hometown. In high school, he developed a keen interest in broadcasting.

With the help of his family, who have always supported his interests, and his teachers, Josh had his first broadcast experience delivering the weather report each morning via the intercom for the high school announcements. He went on to write a weekly article for his hometown newspaper called “The Weather Watcher,” which continued for several years after leaving home for school. He also spent many a summer day taking weather observations and studying the skies at Blue Hill Observatory, one of the most highly regarded weather observatories in the country.

Josh attended and graduated Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont in 2000 with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, and an Associates of Science in Communications. After a summer as a freelance radio meteorologist for a variety of stations in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Josh came to Rochester to work for WHEC-TV, preparing and delivering forecasts that air each Saturday and Sunday at 6 & 11 PM. When he’s not on the air, Josh can be found teaching Weather & Climate at Monroe Community College. In his free time, he enjoys running, working out, listening to jazz (what else!), tinkering with the piano and clarinet, traveling to see family in Boston and California, and spending time with friends.

Josh always loves hearing from listeners so feel free to drop him a line at josh@jazz901.org.

Since 1982, Tom Pethic has been a part of the Rochester jazz scene. Here’s the story of how Tom discovered his love for jazz. At age 21, he heard Joe Romano, the legendary Rochester jazz saxophonist. Romano was performing at The Portside, a local jazz hang-out that was located at the southern end of Irondequoit Bay. Night after night, great jazz music filled the air. As Tom was taking in the emotion that was coming from the bell of Romano’s sax, his life changed. Eventually he needed an outlet for his new found love, jazz music. Pethic ended up seeking out his own jazz radio program. His dream of doing radio became reality, as his first Artistry in Jazz program aired on Jazz 90.1, on October 18th, 1982.

Over the years, Tom Pethic has interviewed many of the world’s finest jazz musicians. They include Sonny Rollins, Dave Brubeck, James Moody, Chick Corea, Les Paul, Joe Pass, Pat Martino, Freddy Cole, Pete LaRoca, Cedar Walton, David ‘Fathead’ Newman, Joe Romano, Bucky Pizzarelli, Larry Willis, Ravi Coltrane, Dena DeRose, Joey DeFrancesco, Jon Hendricks, and Kenny Washington.

Tom Pethic is currently in his 22nd year at Jazz90.1 and can be heard Mondays from 6-9pm. You can e-mail Tom Pethic at tomp@jazz901.org.

Foreground Music is a progressive mix exploring the roots and branches of the jazz family tree, focusing on out-of-the-way and/or out-of-print recordings of anything experimental, improvisational, or exceptional. His proudest jazz moments include finding an Eric Dolphy autograph in the bargain bins, interviewing Lloyd Knibb (inventor of the ska beat), and having Pharoah Sanders, once, allegedly, listen to Foreground Music.

Mike would like to thank all of the musicians played on his show for making the world a better place to live.

Phil has been a volunteer music host on Jazz 90.1 since 1995. He can be heard from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, and does fill-in programs as needed. He was the station’s daily noon to three midday host from November 2006 through December 2010, and hosted various weekend shows between May 1995 and November 2006. Phil’s radio career started at Binghamton University’s WHRW in 1967. His radio work was interrupted somewhat by the “day job” he held (in a completely non-broadcast capacity) from 1971 to 2002. Phil’s Tuesday evening show features a wide variety of music including songs from The Great American Songbook and the great songs written since that era. (Phil likes to call them “Second Generation Standards”). While he may play almost anything, including a few tunes by the original Second Generation artists, the emphasis is on short and sweet. You can contact Phil Dodd by e-mailing phil@jazz901.org.

He currently hosts North Star Sounds on Jazz 90.1 every Tuesday night from ten to Midnight. North Star Sounds features the musicians and composers that are directly inspired by the jazz avant garde of the 1960s, especially John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor and Charles Mingus. All the artists featured on North Star Sounds have made significant commitments and sacrifices in their lives in order to create music that explores the outer limits of tonality, and that also risks disturbing their audience by telling them the secrets of their own hearts (Old Hungarian Proverb: “Tell the truth…and run!”). William Parker, Tim Berne, Odeon Pope, Bruce Eisenbeil, Joe McPhee, William Gagliardi, Anthony Braxton, Satoko Fuji, Lou Grassi, Han Bennink, Ken Vandermark, Fred Anderson, Sonny Simmons, Roscoe Mitchell, Steve Swell, Hamid Drake, the Respect Sextet, Roy Campbell, Rob Brown, Joe Morris, Mariln Crispell, Tony Malaby, Herb Robertson, Peter Brotzman, Greg Bendian, Evan Parker, and Paul Smoker are among the numerous contemporary musical artists featured on North Star Sounds.

He has written and performed his own and other writers work in Rochester since 1988. Mr. Petrie also cohosts the Pure Kona Poetry Open Mic every Thursday evening at House of Hamez. It is the longest running weekly poetry reading in Rochester (“since 1993″). Better wet than read.
