I am a long time jazz fan who enjoys primarily straight ahead jazz along with clear pure voices. I prefer straight ahead because each instrument shines through, and its role in creating the musical mood we hear and experience is wonderful. My favorite musicians range from stalwarts like Miles Davis and Holly Cole to more obscure artists like Nika Rejto and Sue Matthews. Intensity of performance and communication of emotion are the criteria I use in terms of what I like and what I share with my audience.
As much as I enjoy being on the air and sharing music with listeners, there is nothing like going to live performances. There is something special about seeing the artists making their music en vivo and sharing the electricity with like minded people. I feel as though Jazz 90.1 is part of the artist/listener connection that is very magical. I know from talking to various artists over the years that interacting with an audience creates a unique dynamic for them as musicians as well.
I would feel remiss if I did not tell you about me as a person. I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a licensed Mental Health Counselor as well. Aside from being able to share music with all of you, part of joy for me at being associated station is that it gives me an opportunity to let go of the concerns with which I am presented each day and indulge in a persona that is revitalizing. Yoga, reading, and schlock movies also provide this release.
Finally, I have been fortunate enough to have pulled the wool over my lovely wife’s eyes for over three decades. While she does not share my love of jazz, she celebrates my passion and bids me a fond adieu when I go off to my various jazz outings and listens attentively as I talk passionately about the intensity of bass lines or the emotionality conveyed by a singer. My two daughters also support my “jazz habit” and even have been known to buy the old man a disc or two for birthdays or Christmas.
Those of you who have listened to my show have often heard me quip, “Just give me a call if there’s anything you’d like to hear that will make you feel good.” Music in general and jazz in particular is food for the soul. We get fed by being part of Jazz 90.1, and we want you to be part of the “feast” by calling and placing your order.
