On Friday November 28^th, Jazz90.1 will feature the hour long program “Nine Simone - To Be Free” hosted by Nina’s daughter, Simone from 5-6 P.M. This radio special will include the story, music, and life of Nina Simone from colleagues and friends - Odetta, Camille Yarbrough, Guitarist Al Schackman, Patti Smith, Journalist David Nathan, and more. Nina Simone was as powerful and complex a person as the music she played. She called it “Black Gospel Music,” and it resists all definitions. It’s jazz, rhythm and blues, folk and gospel. (more…)

On Saturday November 1, Jazz90.1 WGMC-FM celebrated its 35^th anniversary. The radio station, which is owned and operated by the Greece Central School District, first went on air November 1, 1973 broadcasting from Greece Athena High School. WGMC began as a student run station, broadcasting only four and a half hours per day, and signing off on the weekends and during school holidays and recesses. Later that year, WGMC expanded to seven hours per day, and increased it’s on air hour time to nine hours a day one year later.

The Jazz90.1 Fall 2008 membership campaign has ended. We raised over $50,000, which is needed to keep Jazz90.1 on the air. Each year, Jazz90.1 must raise 100% of its operating budget through fundraising events, and membership campaigns. Jazz90.1 receives no funding from the Greece Central School District, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the State or Federal Government.
