Jazz90.1’s Gary Smith & Dan Gross to be Honored

Jazz90.1 is pleased to announce that veteran broadcaster Gary Smith and volunteer Dan Gross will be recognized by the Rochester Media Association for their service. Each year, the RMA recognizes both established professionals and rising stars within the print, radio and television fields in Rochester. Host of “Big Band Friday” on Jazz90.1, Gary Smith spent 50 years in broadcasting, mostly in the Rochester market, with stops in Buffalo and Miami as well. Stations included WVET/WROC radio and TV, WVOR, and WHAM in Rochester, WWOL in Buffalo, and WAME in Miami. Gary was a DJ, Music Director, Program Director, Sports Director and traffic reporter, and did baseball play-by-play for the Rochester Red Wings, Section 5 tournament basketball play-by-play as well as Nazareth College basketball, and coverage of The Wegmans Rochester International Golf Tournament, the US Open, the PGA and the Ryder Cup at Oak Hill. While at WVOR in the mid-80’s, Gary produced and hosted a weekend show, “Sinatra & The Big Bands.” He’s a long time member and former President of the Rochester Press-Radio Club, a member of the Rochester Radio Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame, the Frontier Field Walk Of Fame, and the Section 5 Basketball Hall Of Fame.

As one of Jazz90.1’s youngest volunteers, Dan Gross is a recent graduate of SUNY Oswego with Bachelor of Fine Arts, and double majored in Broadcasting and Music. Although Dan began his schooling looking to become a sports broadcaster, he decided to focus on music. Dan has experience in radio, and as a reporter for the school newspaper, reviewing and reporting on the school’s academic concerts with an educational twist. In continuing with his journalism experience in college, Dan has forayed into the world of journalism here in Rochester. He is currently a freelance writer. Primarily he writes for the Democrat and Chronicle, and he also maintains a website at dan-gross.com, which he profiles local (and mostly young) musicians about themselves and their current projects in a variety of formats. Dan is a Monday evening jazz host on Jazz90.1. Awards will be presented in May.
