I have been involved in radio for over 20 years. I started out on college radio at WETD at Alfred State College in 1984. It was there at WETD where I found my first Howlin’ Wolf record and the “Blues Bug” officially bit me. I was always interested in the blues because of the classic rock bands of the 60’s & 70’s constant recreations, but immediately was driven to the real true sounds of the Chess Blues Masters when they became known to me.In 1987 & 1988 I moved onto WBSU at SUNY Brockport where the main focus was alternative rock and punk. I produced a combination progressive rock - reggae show my senior year there. During this time I also completed my internship with “Scott and Diane” at 98PXY. It was also around this time I started doing some weekend shifts at WGMC (now Jazz 90.1). I mainly engineered the Red Wing and Amerk games, but was given some opportunity to gain exposure to the great Jazz music the station was playing. After graduating from SUNY Brockport the Afternoon Drive position opened at WGMC and I jumped at the chance to do a drive time shift.
During my time at WGMC I was introduced to Professor Longhair, since the station had one of his records that I was able to play during my show. After I heard Professor Longhair it was over. Like many of his fans I immediately became infatuated with the whole “New Orleans - Louisiana Music Scene.” Next came the discovery of Zydeco Music as C.J. Chenier and His Red Hot Louisiana Band started coming to town in the late 80’s. Once you here Zydeco Music live you can’t help but be hooked.
Within a year I left WGMC for WLKA “Lake Air” & WCGR in Canandaigua, NY. I was given the opportunity to be Music Director of WLKA’s new Jazz Format. At WLKA I would try as often as possible to fuse Jazz & Blues by playing new releases from Johnny Adams, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown and Noble Watts.
By 1991 I had left my chosen career in the radio business to pursue a career in optical sales. After a few years in the optical business I switched to equipment leasing. I now own Rochester Equipment Leasing, Inc. a national source for equipment leasing and business loans.
After I left radio I would occasionally do a fill in show on WGMC. My love affair with the Blues, Zydeco and Louisiana music has continued. I have made numerous trips to New Orleans and Memphis and continue to be an avid collector and supporter of the music I love.
For the past several years I have had the pleasure to be Dave Moskal’s substitute on “Muskies Juke Joint” right here on Jazz 90.1. I currently reside in East Irondequoit with my wife Mary and my two children (Alan & Rachel).
Thank you for supporting the music and this great station!
